Astaxanthin is a carotenoid that is not a source of vitamin A, meaning it cannot be converted into vitamin A in the animal body.
Astaxanthin is both a fat-soluble and water-soluble pigment that occurs naturally in marine organisms such as shrimp, crabs, salmon, and algae. The human body cannot synthesize astaxanthin on its own. It is considered the most potent antioxidant in nature. Its antioxidant activity is 550 times that of Vitamin E and 10 times that of beta-carotene, which is why it is often referred to as the "King of Antioxidants."
